Maintain Beautiful Skin with Sunscreen
One of the most important things to include in your skin care regimen is the use of sunscreen. Using sunscreen with the appropriate SPF (sun protection factor) for your skin type and activity is crucial. When applied correctly, sunscreen lotion will help prevent rapid skin aging, wrinkling and it will reduce your risk of getting melanoma.
The damaging effects of sun exposure at an early age can begin to show around the ages of 40, 50 and 60, so it’s never too early to find the best sunblock for you. Too much time in the sun can cause hyperpigmentation and will break down the skin’s elastin and collagen.
Regardless of your age and skin condition, you should be wearing sun protection every day. UVA rays, which cause the skin to burn, can also cause premature aging. A broad-spectrum sunscreen will protect you. Be sure to use a sunscreen of at least SPF 15 and use the correct amount. The majority of people do not apply enough sunscreen on their bodies when outdoors. For the body, use the amount of lotion equal to what would fill one shot glass. It should be applied every two hours. Anything less than that will give you a false sense of protection.
Another concern is when a sunscreen brand claims to be water “proof.” This claim can be misleading. Water “resistant” lotion can protect for either 40 or 80 minutes. Be sure to read the bottle for instructions.
Sunscreen can also be found in products like moisturizer, foundation and hair conditioner. Each product will indicate how much sun protection it offers, if any.
It is also recommended to avoid direct sun during the hottest times during the day. Stay out of the sun between noon and 4:00 PM. These are the hours that the sun’s rays are most damaging.
