Waxing Tips

Before and After Waxing Tips for Less Painful Hair Removal

If the thought of waxing makes you cringe, you’re not alone. Millions of women dread the hair removal routine, but the end result - smooth and silky (and hair-free) skin – has us continuing to wax away unwanted hair. There are things you can do before waxing, however, that can make the process a little more bearable.

You can use a topical numbing lotion for waxing prior to hair removal that should dull the pain a bit. An over-the-counter product like ibuprofen, taken 30 minutes before waxing begins, can also be helpful. If you’re waxing your legs, you’ll likely experience less discomfort than if treating more sensitive areas such as the bikini area.

Before you Wax

  • Make sure the hair on the area to be waxed is at least one-quarter of an inch long.
  • Don’t use astringent or toner, which tightens pores and causes them to “hold” on to the hair.
  • Don’t bathe or shower just prior to waxing. It’s best to wait several hours after bathing before attempting to wax.
  • Have all your materials close at hand, such as wax, cloths, wax strips, wash cloths, towels and after-waxing products.

After you Wax

  • Stay out of direct sunlight and away from heat (saunas, etc.)
  • Wait to apply lotions, perfumes, colognes or cosmetics to treated area
  • Apply aloe Vera gel or tea tree oil to soothe irritated skin

Other products, such as no scream creams - Relax and Wax No-Scream Cream - offer the promise of reduced pain during waxing. Apply prior to treating the area so the active ingredients, including Benzocaine, will have time to start working.

If you notice red bumps, that may be the start of ingrown hairs. Use an exfoliating lotion to reduce their growth, but don’t exfoliate for at least 48 hours before you wax again.

Finally, consider Gigi Slow Grow, a topical cream that soothes and conditions skin after waxing. The product slows the process of hair re-growth, following waxing treatments.
